<image:caption>So You Want to Play with Electronics is a presentation and accompanying handout making the performance of pieces with electronics more accessible, inexpensive, and practical for performers regardless of technical ability. The presentation uses language of the discipline alongside simple descriptions to introduce and familiarize classical performers with some common programs and gear. The handout has step-by-step instructions for setting up any kind of electronic performance as well as hyperlinks to gear, how-to videos, and various other resources.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Experienced in both individual and group instruction, Philip specializes in helping each student define and achieve their own personal definitions of success and fulfillment through music. Having worked with flutists of all ages and levels from beginners to students at elite conservatories, Philip has developed a wide range of tools for addressing the needs of his students. Philip is currently the Instructor of Flute at the University of Mississippi, offering undergraduate (performance, education, and general music concentrations) and masters degrees in music performance. For questions about the university, please write to pmsnyde1@olemiss.edu. <image:title>Flute Position Guide - Flute Alignment Guide</image:title>
<image:caption>Finding the flute alignment that maximizes ease and efficiency of tone production is an ongoing, dynamic practice. If you have ever experienced a “bad tone day,” you know that a variety of factors including environment, climate, hydration, and sodium intake can change the physiology of the embouchure, meaning we as flutists must constantly recalibrate. To help navigate the seemingly endless possibilities for flute position, I think about experimenting in the three vectors, shown in this graphic. There are, of course, infinite nuances to finding the best setup for an individual, but hopefully this provides anchors within the ether.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tones with Drones - Tones with Drones</image:title>
<image:caption>The easiest and most prevalent method of developing a consistent sound is, of course, a regular practice of long tones. To add a practice of simple interval intonation to a daily long tone routine, it can be helpful to practice with a drone, so either grab a friend or fire up the Tonal Energy app and you can practice listening for tuning and sustain simultaneously. If using a drone generator, I recommend either using a bluetooth speaker or a single earbud; make sure you can still hear yourself clearly. This is one example of adding drones to two common long tone studies (De La Sonorite by Marcel Moyse and Tone Exercises by James Galway). Download the PDF here.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Scale Cards - Scale Cards</image:title>
<image:caption>If you have ever felt bored by playing your scales in the same order every day, or find yourself spacing out in the midst of your usual scale routine, this is one strategy for breaking up the monotony. This set of cards includes all major and minor scales, major and minor scales in thirds, and arpeggios. Shuffle the deck and play through the whole thing, or a portion of the deck if you are short on time; just keep track of which ones you have played through so that you eventually get through the whole deck. Students who are still working on building their scales can remove the cards for which they are not ready. While playing through the deck, set aside cards that give you trouble each day so that you can revisit them slower and more methodically later in a practice session. Contact me at psnyder@philip-snyder.com to purchase a set at cost (costs of printing and shipping are ~$15 each).</image:caption>
